My Astrophotography Gear

A well-balanced astrophotography setup is essential for capturing detailed and high-quality images of the night sky. Below is my complete gear, arranged in the order of its role in the imaging process.

1. Telescope (Main Optics)

The Redcat 51 is the core of my setup. It is a high-quality wide-field refractor designed specifically for astrophotography. With its fast focal ratio and excellent optics, it delivers sharp, well-corrected images, making it perfect for capturing nebulae, star clusters, and wide-field deep-sky objects.

2. Main Camera

I use the 533 MC Pro as my primary imaging camera. This cooled one-shot color camera provides very low noise, high sensitivity, and consistent performance during long exposures. Its square sensor also makes framing objects easier and more efficient.

3. Mount (Tracking System)

The iEXOS PMC-8 mount is responsible for tracking celestial objects accurately. It provides reliable GoTo functionality and stable tracking, which is crucial for long-exposure astrophotography. Its lightweight design also makes it suitable for portable setups.

4. Control System

To manage and automate the entire setup, I use Stellavita. It allows me to control the mount, camera, and guiding system, as well as perform polar alignment and image acquisition—all without needing a laptop.

5. Guiding Setup

Accurate guiding is essential for sharp images, especially during long exposures.

  • Guide Scope: The SVBONY 30mm guide scope is a compact and lightweight solution for guiding.
  • Guide Camera: Paired with it is the QHY G3M 662M guide camera, which offers high sensitivity and fast response for precise tracking corrections.
